Work begins for new restaurant, retail space at Garden City

A new wave of construction activity is underway at Garden City Center, with the completion of new retail and restaurant space near the southern end of the outdoor shopping destination planned for next year.

Mayor Allan Fung on Sept. 15 visited the site to strike the ceremonial first blow on demolition of the 9,000-square-foot building located to the south of Newport Creamery on the west side of the center.

The building dates back to the 1950s and was expanded in the 1990s. It most recently housed an Ameriprise Financial office.

In place of that structure will rise 30,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space. Demolition and site preparation and slated to be complete before the current year’s end, with the new construction starting in the spring of 2017.

Joe Koechel, Garden City’s general manager, said the hope with the new development is to “mirror” the pedestrian-friendly village style of the northern end of the shopping center.

“This is a great place to walk around,” he said.

Koechel said Garden City is in talks with several potential tenants for the new space, although nothing has yet been finalized.

Fung called the latest phase of development “another new beginning” in what has to date been an eight-year revitalization process at Garden City.

“It’s been a long time coming,” he said, praising The Wilder Companies – which manages the site – for its work to “grow Garden City in such a wonderful way.”

The shopping center has seen major changes in recent years as part of a multi-phase redevelopment effort. Most recently, the center welcomed L.L. Bean to the former Staples site at its southern end.
