Reggae is featured next on the eclectic concert and festival calendar of the Providence Event Series presented by Rob Levine & Associates, The Heavy Hitter, as seven-time Grammy award winner and Emmy winner Ziggy Marley will take the stage on Friday, September 23 at the Alex & Ani City Center in Providence’s Kennedy Plaza. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and a popular local band yet to be announced will open the show.

“Ziggy Marley is sure to end the concert portion of the Providence Event Series season on a high note,” said Michele Maker Palmieri, president and CEO of Waterfront Productions, the parent company of Rhode Island Waterfront Events. Palmieri added that there is one final event on the festival side of the Series and that is the International Oktoberfest, to take place on the weekend directly following the Marley concert, September 24 and 25.

Born in 1968 in Trenchtown, Jamaica, Ziggy Marley is the eldest son of reggae legend Bob Marley. He began his musical career in 1979 playing with his father and his siblings on “Children Playing in the Streets” and has gone on to win seven Grammy awards, first with his brothers and sisters in the band Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers and then as a solo artist.

Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers released their debut album, Play the Game Right, in 1985. After cutting several more albums, the band moved to Virgin records in 1988 and recorded the record Conscious Party which featured the hit songs, “Tomorrow People” and “Tumblin’ Down” and won the group its first Grammy award. They followed that up with five albums in the 1990s, two of which scored Grammy nods, One Bright Day and Fallen is Babylon.

After striking out on his own with the critically-acclaimed Dragonfly in 2003, Marley arrived as a solo artist in 2006, when he won a Grammy for the album, Love Is My Religion. The year 2009 saw Marley win his fifth Grammy award, but his first in the children’s area. Family Time featured appearances by several members of his family as well as notable guests Jack Johnson, Paul Simon and Willie Nelson. In 2011, Marley marked his 30-year career with a release of his first graphic novel, MarijuanaMan, and his Grammy award-winning album, Wild and Free, on his self-owned record label Tuff Gong Worldwide. His 2012 live album, Ziggy Marley in Concert, earned him his sixth Grammy for “Best Reggae Album.” More recently, Marley released his debut children’s book, I Love You Too, while earning his seventh Grammy for his fifth solo studio album, Fly Rasta. His latest album release is entitled, Ziggy Marley. Always socially aware, Marley continues to be active with his Foundation, U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment) to help underprivileged children go to school.
