Back to school, back to work at Eden Park

The students and staff at Eden Park Elementary School got right back into the groove of things during last week's first week back. According to sixth grade teacher Annemarie Torres, "We got right into the school year."

With two rolling carts of laptops available for classroom use, along with desktop computers in the classroom, technology is integrated into much of the classroom instruction, assessment and reinforcement.

“We'll be getting back into daily routines and working on the daily curriculum, starting centers and focus on units of study,” Torres said.

Torres is especially excited about implementing this year's science curriculum in her classroom. She, along with many other teachers across the state, took part in a weeklong science program over the summer, Rhode Island Technology Enhanced Science (RITES) and will partake in the rest of the program throughout the school year. Participation in the program allows teachers up to $700 in science equipment for their classroom each year. The program is a two-year commitment for teachers in grades 5 through 12, with both fall and spring sessions in addition to the summer session.

"Part of the program took place at the University of Rhode Island, and part of it took place at Rhode Island College," said Torres. "We will be receiving a lot of science materials and equipment, and I'm very excited about that."
