The Cranston Housing Authority will celebrate the 62nd anniversary of its charter, which was issued by the Rhode Island Secretary of State on November 1, 1961. The Board of Commissioners and staff of the Cranston Housing Authority will celebrate this milestone anniversary by hosting a lunch for all housing authority residents complete with birthday cake.
Mayor Ken Hopkins is expected to attend and present a citation on behalf of the City of Cranston.
"For sixty-two years, the Cranston Housing Authority has consistently and effectively served the housing needs of low-income senior and disabled residents of Cranston." noted Executive Director, Robert Coupe. "This is an important moment in our history as our Housing Authority will share its birthday with the newest residents who are eligible for our elderly housing facilities. This milestone is another reminder of the important work we do providing safe and affordable housing for elderly residents in Cranston."
The Cranston Housing Authority is one of the largest public housing authorities in Rhode Island, serving more than twelve hundred families in its Public Housing and Section 8 voucher programs. The Public Housing program provides subsidized housing for low-income elderly and disabled residents at six residential facilities, in addition to seventeen "scattered sites." Under HUD regulations, a sixty-two-year-old person becomes eligible for "elderly" subsidized housing.
The Cranston Housing Authority also pays a monthly rental subsidy to more than two hundred private property owners in Cranston on behalf of low-income tenants who hold Section 8
Housing Choice vouchers.
Wednesday's celebration will take place in the Community Room at Knightsville Manor, located at 85 Briggs Street beginning at 12:00 Noon.
