In yet another of the annual Halloween events held at Sprague Mansion by the Cranston Historical Society, October 20 brought the Charlie the Butler Ghost Party to the historical mansion with a special appearance from Magician and Mentalist Jared DuBois.
The history behind Charlie the Butler goes back to the 1800’s. Now just a spooky legend, Charles was originally a butler at the mansion who had two daughters. He wanted the eldest to marry the son of the wealthy owner of the mansion. Unfortunately, it saddened Charles that it never came to fruition. It is thought he is still “roaming” the mansion distraught that his daughter failed to marry the young man and make Charlie as rich as the family he worked for.
In an incident with a Ouija Board in 1968, Charlie’s name was spelled out and “tell my story,” which has never been forgotten and sparks this yearly event that seeks to bring out the ghosts of the mansion. (Photos by Steve Popiel)
