Ward 5 Councilman Chris Paplauskas confirmed last week that he continues to mull a run for the mayor’s office.
“I’m strongly considering it … I plan to make a decision in the spring,” he told the Herald.
Paplauskas made history in 2014, becoming the first Republican to win the council’s Ward 5 seat in decades. He was reelected in 2016 and 2018.
The councilman’s acknowledgement of his continued interest in a bid came as his fellow Republican, City Council President Michael Farina, prepared to officially announce his own candidacy.
The field could prove crowded. On the GOP side, Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung, wife of Mayor Allan Fung, and Jim Donahue, a former councilman, are also potential candidates for the party’s nomination.
No Democrats have yet officially announced their candidacy, although former councilwoman Maria Bucci has filed paperwork indicated she is planning a campaign. Citywide Councilman Steve Stycos, state Rep. Charlene Lima and former mayor Michael Napolitano are others eying the mayor’s office, which is becoming open for the first time in more than a decade.
