RIC swim splits meet

Senior Anna Vygoder (Lincoln, R.I.) finished second in both the 50-yard breaststroke (33.41) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.08) as the Rhode Island College women’s swimming team split a double-double meet hosted by Eastern Connecticut on Monday afternoon.

Rhode Island College defeated Western Connecticut, 169.0-46.0, but was upended by the hosts, 208.0-52.0.

Vygoder also finished third in the 200-yard IM (2:35.48) and fifth in the 400-yard medley relay (4:54.94).

Senior Alina Krafton (Wakefield, R.I.) finished fifth in the 400-yard medley relay (4:54.94), 100-yard freestyle (1:06.21) and the 50-yard butterfly (31.91), while also finishing sixth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:19.24).

Senior Meghan Laflamme (Smithfield, R.I.) finished third in the 50-yard freestyle (29.13), fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:18.05) and fifth in both the 400-yard medley relay (4:54.94) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:28.84). Senior Rebecca Fyrer (Cranston, R.I.) finished fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (13:51.87), 50-yard backstroke (35.76), 500-yard freestyle (6:46.00) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:57.94).

Freshman Kate Clayman (Smithfield, R.I.) finished fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:57.94), fifth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (16:01.42), sixth in the 400-yard medley relay (6:25.18), and seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:34.50). Sophomore Olivia Landry (Lincoln, R.I.) finished sixth in both the 400-yard medley relay (6:25.18) and the 50-yard butterfly (51.20), seventh in the 50-yard backstroke (56.21) and eighth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:53.19).

Senior Marta Matzko (Rumford, R.I.) finished fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:57.94) and sixth in the 200-yard IM (3:01.99), 100-yard freestyle (1:10.95) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:41.35). Freshman Elizabeth Shepard (Smithfield, R.I.) finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (8:45.65), sixth in the 400-yard medley relay (6:25.18) and seventh in both the 100-yard butterfly (1:45.11) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:24.50). 

Sophomore Morgan McCann (Pawtucket, R.I.) finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:22.15), fifth in both the 400-yard medley relay (4:54.94) and the 50-yard breaststroke (37.90) and sixth the 50-yard freestyle (29.80). Freshman Nicole Sutherland (Attleboro, Mass.) finished fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:57.94) and sixth in the 400-yard medley relay (6:25.18), 50-yard backstroke (43.20) and 100-yard backstroke (1:32.56).

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to the University of New England on Saturday, Jan. 20 (noon).

Edjang earns LEC award

Rhode Island College freshman Enrique Edjang (Providence, R.I.) was named the Little East Men’s Field Athlete of the Week and Rookie Field Athlete of the Week for his performance at the Tufts Jumbo Invitational on Jan. 13.

He finished first in the weight throw (15.95m). RIC finished in fourth place (four teams) with a team score of 41.5. Tufts won the meet with a score of 283.5.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at the URI Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 20 (11 a.m.).

RIC track shines at Tufts

Sophomore Haley Oliver (Coventry, R.I.) finished first in both the 1,000m (3:11.19) and the mile (5:23.59) as the Rhode Island College women’s track and field team competed at the Tufts Jumbo Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

RIC finished third (four teams) with a team score of 48.0. Tufts won the meet with a team score of 261.0.

Junior Samantha Sainristil (Cranston, R.I.) finished first in the weight throw (14.53m) and sixth in the shot (10.31m).

Freshman Shirley Portillo (North Providence, R.I.) finished third in the 600m (1:59.32). Freshman Sela Bastajian (Smithfield, R.I.) finished sixth in the 400m (1:05.80), seventh in the triple jump (8.06m) and 10th in the 200m (29.30).

Freshman Diamond Gentile (Coventry, R.I.) finished sixth in the triple jump (9.29m), ninth in the long jump (4.07m), 14th in the 60m (8.76) and 18th in the 200m (30.48). Freshman Marlyn Dunlop (Providence, R.I.) finished 10th in the long jump (3.73m) and 17th in the 200m (30.10).

Sophomore Milana Melvin (Johnston, R.I.) finished 10th in the weight throw (11.67m) and 18th in the shot (8.68m).

Freshman Miya Barboza (New Bedford, Mass.) finished eighth in the long jump (4.42m) and 15th in the 200m (29.90).

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at the URI Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 20 (11 a.m.).
