Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk Ellison, a college English professor and novelist with high standards who writes a stereotypical “Black” novel as a satire on black writers, only to have the book become a huge hit.
The book becomes eligible for a major book award. To complicate matters, Monk is on the selection committee.
The movie also becomes a family drama and love story, with the issue of journalistic honesty always in the mix.
Monk, who wanted to show the literary world what good writing was, gets caught in his own attempt at satire.
How is he ever going to solve his dilemma?
The movie offers more than one clever ending, letting you decide.
