CVS Health Corp. will lay off 500 jobs in Rhode Island as part of nationwide cuts.

Nearly 200 Rhode Island residents will lose their jobs as part of CVS Health Corp.’s nationwide layoffs, according to a notice filed with the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training.

The Aug. 18 letter, which has not been posted publicly but was obtained by Rhode Island Current on Monday, states that 500 workers spanning CVS’ Woonsocket headquarters and Cumberland offices will be laid off starting Oct. 21. That number includes remote workers who report to supervisors in Cumberland or Woonsocket, according to the letter from Jennifer Bailey, executive director for colleague relations with CVS. Of the 500, 198 layoffs are employees who live in Rhode Island.

Under the federal Worker Adjustment And Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, companies are required to notify the state Department of Labor and Training before they lay off a significant number of workers.

The Woonsocket-based pharmacy unveiled plans earlier this month to lay off 5,000 of 300,000 employees nationwide. At the time, it said cuts would be centered at corporate facilities, and that customer-facing jobs would be spared.

Bailey’s letter lists more than 100 position types that will be cut starting in October, including 25 customer care pharmacists, 23 “Rx call center” technicians, 22 administrative assistants, 22 “scrum master” managers, and 20 managers of pharmacy operations.

The layoffs at one of the state’s largest employers will leave the company with around 7,500 workers in Rhode Island, Mike DeAngelis, a company spokesperson, said in an email response on Monday.

“We do not anticipate there will be any impact to our clients and customers as we remain focused on our mission – continuing to provide the exceptional care and support our customers, patients and communities deserve and depend on,” DeAngelis said in a statement. “Throughout our company’s history, we’ve continuously adapted to market dynamics to lead the industry. The difficult decision we are making will set the company up for long-term success.”
