Locals lead Anchorwomen past UMass-Dartmouth

Senior Anna Vygoder (Lincoln) finished first in four events as Rhode Island College defeated UMass Dartmouth, 162-48, in Little East women’s swimming action held at the Sandra E. Surdut Swimming Pool in the Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.

RIC honored Vygoder, senior Rebecca Fyrer (Cranston), Senior Meghan Laflamme (Smithfield) and senior Marta Matzko (Rumford) along with their families, as part of Senior Day prior to the meet.

Vygoder finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.74), 200-yard breaststroke (2:41.29), 100-yard IM (1:10.56) and the 800-yard freestyle relay (9:34.44).

Senior Alina Krafton (Wakefield) finished first in the 200-yard medley relay (2:25.13), 200-yard freestyle (2:21.32) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:13.60).

Laflamme finished first in both the 200-yard backstroke (2:50.56) and the 800-yard freestyle relay (9:34.44) and second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:58.67). Fyrer finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (29.98), 500-yard freestyle (6:31.77) and the 800-yard freestyle relay (9:34.44) and second in the 400-yard IM (5:45.13).

Sophomore Morgan McCann (Pawtucket) finished first in the 200-yard medley relay (2:25.13), second in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:32.62) and the 100-yard IM (1:14.57) and third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:56.16).

Matzko finished first in the 800-yard freestyle relay (9:34.44), second in the 100-yard freestyle (1:18.63) and third in the 200-yard butterfly (3:06.99). Freshman Nicole Sutherland (Attleboro, Mass.) finished first in both the 200-yard medley relay (2:25.13) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:32.53), second in the 200-yard backstroke (3:19.93) and third in the 50-yard freestyle (35.88).

Sophomore Olivia Landry (Lincoln) finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (2:42.43) and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:45.00).

Freshman Elizabeth Shepard (Smithfield) finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (2:42.43) and third in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:41.09) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:37.48).

Freshman Abigail Steinhilber (Warwick) finished second in both the 200-yard medley relay (2:42.43) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:34.57). Freshman Ivy Par (Pawtucket) finished first in the 200-yard medley relay (2:25.13), fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:37.05) and fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (3:35.36).

 Freshman Kate Clayman (Smithfield) finished second in both the 200-yard medley relay (2:42.43) and the 500-yard freestyle (7:19.66) and third in the 100-yard IM (1:28.64).

 In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at the 2024 Little East Championship, held at the Boston Sports Institute on Feb. 16-18.

RIC women stay unbeaten

Graduate guard Sophia Guerrier (Waltham, Mass.) scored 14 points to reach 1,000 for her career as an Anchorwoman as No. 3 Rhode Island College defeated Plymouth State, 78-38, in a Little East women’s basketball game on Saturday afternoon.

After roaring out to a 13-2 lead in just 2:57, the Anchorwomen would continue to build a sizeable, 24-11, lead after the first quarter.

RIC would round out the first half by going on a 14-3 run to take a 42-18 lead going into halftime.

At the end of the third quarter, Guerrier would hit a step back jumper as time expired to eclipse the 1,000-point mark in her Anchorwomen career. This shot would boost the club’s lead to 61-34 entering the final stanza.

Junior guard Jayda Bing (Hamilton, N.J.) scored seven points in the fourth quarter en route to the win.

Fifth-year forward Izabelle Booth (Newport) registered a season-high 19 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Fifth-year guard Olivia Middleton (Barrington) and Bing also scored in double figures with 10 and 13-point efforts, respectively.

Guerrier, who scored her 1,000th career point (including her one season at Felician) at Southern Maine on Dec. 6 now has 1,001 points as an Anchorwoman.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East action at home vs. Western Connecticut on Wednesday, Feb. 7 (5:30 p.m.).
