Janis G. McDowell, 73, formerly of Cranston, died Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence after a very brief illness. Born in Providence to Edward A. and Grace A. (Johnson) McDowell, Janis is survived by her brother John E. McDowell (wife Bernadette) of Warwick, RI, her sister Nancy E. McDowell (husband Andrew Ougheltree) of Little Compton, RI, and her brother Wayne M. McDowell of Narragansett, RI.

She was the aunt of Amanda Carlson, Jason McDowell, Farrell Ougheltree, Olivia Ougheltree, Isabelle Ougheltree, Arkaska Ougheltree and the late Jonathan McDowell. She is also survived by her great nieces and nephews: Brayden Carlson, Madison Carlson, Fiona Breeze and Elsie McDowell.

Janis graduated from Pilgrim High School in 1968 and from Northeastern University, Boston, in 1973 earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. After graduation she worked in sales and  human services as a grant writer for a private school in Vermont.   She was employed as receptionist and switchboard operator at Saint Elizabeth Home on Melrose Street in Providence until retiring in 2020. Janis loved sewing and knitting. She was an avid reader. She will be remembered as an independent woman who also loved to travel.

Calling hours were held at the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Warwick, on Monday, April 29 from 10:00 - 12:00 PM immediately followed by a prayer service beginning at 12.
