New hours at Knightsville Library to begin Monday, April 3

Posted

The Cranston Public Library’s Knightsville branch will begin new hours of service on Monday, April 3, 2023.

The new hours will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM. The Knightsville branch is closed on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

This change in hours will help the library to serve the growing preschool population in the Northern part of Cranston. There are some neighborhoods where 12 to 14% of the population is under the age of 5. The average for the city is 5.59%, which shows just how many young children are living in the area. The Knightsville branch is in the best position to serve this population.

“We saw that the preschool population was growing, and we are making this change to address the needs of the changing community,” Library Director Ed Garcia said. “We want to be as welcoming and family-friendly as possible for our youngest patrons.”

Now Knightsville will be open at preschool primetime, and families in the area will be able to take advantage of a core library service without traveling across town.

Emily Brown Suon, Coordinator of Youth Services, said “We're really excited to expand our morning storytime services to these families because we know how valuable early literacy programming is, and the morning is the best time to engage preschool children--before naptime, lunchtime, and when their siblings come home from school.”

Knightsville will begin offering storytime during the next session, which starts the last week of April. "Colors Storytime" will be on Wednesdays at 10:30 AM, beginning April 26. It will feature songs, stories, crafts about colors, and tactile activities like felt boards, egg shakers, and scarves. This program is perfect for ages 0-5, so if families have more than one preschool child at home, both children can benefit from the storytime experience.

The Knightsville branch is located at 1847 Cranston St. Cranston, RI 02920
