Police: Man shot at Pontiac Avenue home was burglar

A man who was shot while breaking into a Pontiac Avenue home during the early-morning hours of June 27 is facing multiple charges, according to Cranston Police Maj. Todd Patalano.

Brendan Anderson, 36, Cranston, is still being treated at Rhode Island Hospital, Patalano said Tuesday. He is charged with burglary, assault and disorderly conduct.

Patalano said officers responded to 1012 Pontiac Ave. at 3:10 a.m. In the home’s basement, a man in his 30s was found with a gunshot wound in the area of his upper chest and shoulder.

In the aftermath of the police response – which closed a portion of Pontiac Avenue for a time and drew widespread attention – Patalano said the two occupants of the home were cooperating with authorities. On Tuesday, he said the occupants had acted in self-defense and are not facing charges in the incident.

Patalano said the homeowners were awoken by a noise at approximately 3 a.m. on June 27 and found the power had gone out. When one of the occupants went into the basement to check the circuit breaker, he was confronted by a man – later identified as Anderson – wearing a mask and armed with pepper spray. The other occupant, meanwhile, had retrieved a firearm.

“When this individual confronted [the homeowners] and began spraying them with pepper spray, at some point the intruder was shot,” Patalano said.

“At this time, there are no charges against the homeowners and they appear to have acted appropriately and in self-defense, being in fear for their own safety,” the major said.

He added: “It should be noted that all of these individuals were known to each other. This is not a random incident.”
