Falcons beat Wizards in season opener

The Cranston West football team would hold off West Warwick to win its season opener 27-24 to get some revenge over the Wizards, who dealt the Falcons a shocking comeback defeat last season.

The Falcons were led by quarterback Kelan Cornell who returns for his second year under center. Cornell paced the offense with three rushing touchdowns while David Boscia added another.

West got some timely defense in the win as well, including interceptions from Jack Majcher and Ethan Parent. Majcher’s interception came deep in the second quarter to help the Falcons take a 21-6 lead into the break, would give them the insurance necessary to hold off West Warwick as its offense began to click in the second half.

The Falcons enter the season with hopes of returning to the Division II playoffs. A big question for the team is who will replace All-Division back Marcus Chung. If opening night was any indication, the Falcons are likely to take a committee approach and throw a variety of looks at opposing defenses this upcoming season, mixing in Cornell, Boscia and Majcher. West finished the night completing just one pass on three attempts, allowing its back to roll up their sleeves and take control.

“Our game plan is to just pound the ball and keep looking forward. We have a few guys that can make things happen, so we are just going to keep running down your throat until you stop us,” said Boscia, who led the team with carries and yards as he finished with just under 100 on the ground.

The Falcons are now 1-0 overall and will take on Burrillville in their league opener this week at home. With a young roster, Cornell was glad to see the team start the year off with a win, especially against the Wizards, who are becoming a fun rivalry each year.

“It’s very important, especially with such a young team and guys still learning. We have a lot of work to do, but to get this win, against these guys. It’s definitely satisfying and gives us momentum,” said Cornell.

Cornell also tipped his cap to the West offensive line, which dominated from the get-go to help the running game take off.

“I have to give credit to our offensive line. They played great all game and they were the ones that set up all of those runs. Also the student section, they show out every game and give us so much energy,” said Cornell.
