The Cranston Neighborhood Tree Planting Program is accepting applications for the 2023 spring planting schedule. The program is free to all eligible property owners – including homeowners, small business owners and non-profit organizations.
Help beautify Cranston by applying for a free, seven-foot-tall native species tree, which will be planted by a professional nursery. Trees must be planted in the front yard, but not between sidewalks and the curb.

Cranston is now accepting FY23-24 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) applications. Funds will be used to support a wide range of activities specifically targeted to benefit persons of moderate and low income. Program examples supported by CDBG funds include housing rehabilitation, emergency fuel assistance, minority outreach health programs, Adult Day Care and a Mayor’s Scholarship Program. The RI Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals will hold its little critter camp for children ages eight to 11 from April 10 to 14. During this half-day camp, kids will learn small animal pet responsibility. Camp runs daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Riverside (186 Amaral St.). Volunteers from the AARP Tax Aide program will be available for tax help on Fridays (from Feb. 3 to April 14) in the Giles Community Room at Central Library. This is by appointment only. Individuals should call 401-484-1415 to make an appointment between 9 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. Once an appointment has been made, please pick up a tax intake form at the Central library Circulation Desk during open library hours. Individuals should come to the library at their appointed time with their completed intake form and tax documents to file your taxes with a tax aide. Masks will be required for everyone participating in the AARP Tax Aide program.
The 1916 Commemorative Committee will sponsor a lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 3 at the RI Irish Ceilidhe Club (50 America St., Cranston). This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement which brought to an end most of the violence in the North of Ireland. Ciaran Quinn, the Sinn Fein representative for North America will discuss the agreement’s potential for Irish unity. He will also point out the challenges of the British government that continues to cover up its actions during the conflict and the current state of play on Brexit. The downstairs pub will be open from 6 p.m. serving drinks and pub grub. There will be music after the lecture which is open to the public.
Come to William Hall Library and challenge yourself with their Robot Obstacle course on Feb. 4 from 11 a.m. to noon. Join Dr. Richard Lobban at Central Library from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 18 for a presentation examining the recent past and current events in the War in Ukraine and looks at strategies, tactics and weapons systems involved in the months ahead. The talk will include a special look at Putin’s “Secret” Army: The Wagner Group and its African roots. Lobban, adjunct professor of African security studies at the Naval War College, offers his own perspective and does not speak on behalf of any agency or entity. The Explore the Woonasquatucket Recreation Series helps the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council to continue restoring the Woonasquatucket River and Greenway. The 2023 applications are now open for the PrepareRI High School Summer Internship Program. If you are, or have, a rising senior this summer, this paid opportunity is an excellent one for college or career resumes. Students attend a one week paid ($15/hr.) boot camp which prepares them for interviews and work-related skills as well as helps them to determine things like their strengths and weaknesses, and then are matched to a full-time, paid ($15/hr.), five-week summer internship that gives them hands-on, real world work experience in a possible career interest. Hundreds of students across RI participate in these internships and the application process is a multi-phased process including submitting essays, a resume, participating in an orientation and interviews.
