Cranston co-op set for regionals

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Cranston gymnastics co-op wrapped up its regular season last week and is getting set to compete in this week’s regional meet at Dream Big.

The team posted its highest scores at Sunday’s meet, which was also the club’s Senior Night. Cranston finished the regular season with a 4-4 record.

“Sunday night was our Senior Night and it was our best meet ever, they were the best scores that we ever had. They were so pumped up, enthusiastic, full of energy, and they really dug deep. They pulled it out,” said Cranston coach Tanya Forti.

Forti was proud of her club, especially the four senior leaders – Emily Lopez, Emily Parillo, Emma Ucci and Emily Whitlock.

“They’re so pumped up because they did so well, especially the seniors, I think that it will be important for them to go out with a bang. They have been taking it easy, saving themselves for (regionals). We rely on the seniors, they set the tone and are so supportive to everyone. They get the group going and help build confidence,” said Forti.

The team will be facing tough competition this weekend, including defending regional champion Warwick, which finished its regular season unbeaten.

“They know a lot of the girls and are familiar with them. We think the world of them, they are incredible athletes. It motivates everyone to go out there and do their personal best. When you’re surrounded by such strong competition, it makes you want to dig deep and do your best,” Forti said.

As the team gets prepared to put on a show this weekend and then later this month at the individual state championships, Forti hopes that the girls will put their best foot forward and come up with one last big performance, but also to enjoy the ride.

“(The seniors) have been incredible to watch. To watch them with their struggles and how hard they work, then they go out there and just shine,” said Forti, who is also wrapping up her first season as the team’s head coach. “The bar for regionals would be to put our all into it, keep fighting, don’t give up and to get those scores up there. Most importantly, though, to have fun. Do your best and whatever happens, happens.”

The regional meet is slated for this Sunday at Dream Big in Cranston. Warm ups begin at 6 p.m. with the competition starting shortly after. The individual state meet is expected to take place later this month at Rhode Island College.
